How Many Cookies Do You Need for Your Wedding Cookie Table?
It’s the first question every Pittsburgh bride and groom asks — and the one the mom and future mother-in-law is quietly wondering too. The classic guidance is 6 to 8 cookies per guest, but the right number depends on your guest count, how generous you want the table to look, and whether guests will be taking cookies home as favors.
Tell us about your wedding and we'll calculate exactly how many dozen cookies you need, plus a recommended lineup straight from The 25 Must Have Cookies cookbook. Choose the cookies you'd like for your table, check off as many as you want from either tab below. 💡 Plan on about 4–6 dozen for each baker, per type of cookie, when assigning names below. These are from the 25 must-have cookies in our cookbook.
How many cookies do you need?
Why guessing the cookie count goes wrong.
Most families either dramatically overbake, like our family does, leaving 30 dozen cookies nobody can finish. Or other families may underbake, and the table looks bare by 9pm.
Both come from the same problem: nobody ran the numbers against the actual guest list until it was too late to ask Aunt Alicia for more buckeyes.
A cookie table isn’t just dessert. It’s a visual centerpiece guests photograph all night, and a half-empty table photographs very differently than a full one. Getting the quantity right the first time means every family baker knows exactly what they’re responsible for, with enough lead time to actually deliver it.
How we calculate your numbers
We use the same ranges we use for every wedding we bake for and it also follows what the Pittsburgh bakeries and cookie table coordinators have relied on for decades:
- Light table: 4–5 cookies per guest
- Traditional table: 6–8 cookies per guest (the most common choice)
- Generous table: 8–10 cookies per guest
From there, we recommend a variety count based on your guest list size. A 50-person wedding doesn’t need the same visual variety as a 300-person wedding, and divide your total dozens across that number of varieties so every family baker gets a clear, specific choice!
Frequently asked questions
How many varieties of cookies should be on a wedding cookie table?
Most Pittsburgh cookie tables feature 8 to 16 varieties, depending on guest count. Smaller weddings (under 75 guests) look better with fewer varieties at higher quantities, while larger weddings benefit from more variety to keep the table visually full.
Should I plan extra cookies for guests to take home?
Yes, if you want guests to take a to-go box. Add roughly 2 extra cookies per guest if favors are part of your plan, our calculator includes a toggle for this.
What are the must-have cookies for a Pittsburgh wedding cookie table?
Buckeyes, lady locks, and pizzelles are considered essential by most Pittsburgh and Youngstown families. For the full lineup and the recipes behind them see The 25 Must Have Cookies Cookbook.
Can I have a cookie table with dietary restrictions in mind?
Absolutely. We recommend at least one gluten-free and one nut-free variety on every table, regardless of size, so every guest has something they can enjoy. In our family, we have tree nut, peanut, gluten and dairy issues so we make sure there are a few types that our guests can enjoy – ps and us too!
